What You Really Need to Prepare to Breastfeed

Before launching into your breastfeeding journey, it's essential to gather the tools and knowledge that will set you up for success. Save your money by not buying “breastfeeding supplies” until you have met with me. Here's what you really need to prepare:

1. Education and Support

  • Take a prenatal breastfeeding class to familiarize yourself with the process and potential challenges.

  • Seek support from a lactation consultant, healthcare provider, or local breastfeeding support group.

2. Comfortable Nursing Bras and Tops

  • Invest in a few comfortable, supportive nursing bras and tops to make breastfeeding more convenient. Don’t buy a lot! Your size might change. A good measure is to get one cup size bigger. No underwire and comfortable are key.

3. Breast Pump (Optional)

  • If you plan to express milk or anticipate being separated from your baby, a breast pump can be a valuable tool.

  • I love to meet with clients before-hand to help them pick out the best pump for their needs! There are good, better, best pumps.

4. Nursing Pads

  • Stock up on disposable or washable nursing pads to manage leaks and keep your clothing dry.

5. Nipple Cream

  • Your own breast milk works best to heal any sore nipples, but I prefer a natural nipple cream, ie: mother-love or earth mama-angel baby. You could also use coconut oil or olive oil. If you have a good latch, nipple creams should not be needed long term.

  • I will be posting a whole blog post about Nipple Care!

6. Breastfeeding-Friendly Snacks and Hydration

  • Keep nutritious snacks and a water bottle nearby, as breastfeeding can make you feel hungry and thirsty.

  • I like to suggest putting these, your breast pads, diapers, wipes, burp rags, etc. in a caddy (rolling) or baskets near your bed and couch/chair!

7. Quiet and Comfortable Feeding Area

  • Create a cozy nook with a comfortable chair and essential supplies for peaceful breastfeeding sessions, OR settle-in with your family on the couch or breastfeed in your bed, it really doesn’t matter!!

8. Patience and Persistence

  • Remember that establishing a breastfeeding routine takes time and effort. Approach it with patience and seek help like me, if needed.

By preparing with these essentials, you can confidently launch into the beautiful and rewarding experience of breastfeeding. Always remember that each breastfeeding journey is unique, and seeking professional assistance can significantly enhance your experience.
