My passion is giving you the care you deserve.
About Me
Hello Everyone!!
My name is Katie Scott. I am a friendly, chubby, middle-aged farm chick that loves to hang out in my jammies with my family and my goats! I have been a Registered Nurse for 27 years. I have worked predominantly in Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, Newborn Nursery, and as an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant).
I am also a farmer and have raised dairy goats for about 51 years. I have a herd of 30+ goats and I milk many by hand every day! So… I literally do something related to “Lactation” every day of my life! I am also, most importantly, a wife and mother of four wonderful children. Visit my farm website at Overthemoonfamilyfarm.com to see my goats!
For years my co-workers begged me to help their patients attach their babies to the breast. They jokingly called me the “Breastfeeding Fairy”, “Baby Whisperer”, or “Latch Queen”, etc. Parents would constantly ask me to “go home with them”! Well, I couldn’t, and I didn’t want them to feel like they were being deserted after discharge from the hospital. It was then I realized I could do more good for parents by going to their homes and following their progress if I went into Private Practice!
I have spent MANY hours working with breastfeeding mothers, taken many hours of Lactation related education and then a rigorous exam to be able to give you the most expert level of care. I have experienced breastfeeding struggles of my own and am deeply empathetic to everything that you may be experiencing. I WANT to help. Helping parents prepare for their baby and succeed at breastfeeding is my ultimate goal and brings me a lot of joy to see success. That is my reason for doing what I do.
Love, Katie
Why an IBCLC?
Hiring an IBCLC before you have your baby is an investment that will last a lifetime. Being prepared and having your team of support prenatally is one of the things I feel very passionate about. However, if you have not hired someone to help, here is why I would recommend an IBCLC. (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant)
1. Expertise and Accreditation: IBCLCs are the only internationally certified healthcare professionals specifically trained to support women with breastfeeding. They undergo extensive training and education to earn their certification, providing evidence-based care to support mothers in achieving their breastfeeding goals.
2. Individualized Care: IBCLCs provide personalized care tailored to the unique needs of each mother and baby. They assess and address specific challenges such as latch issues, low milk supply, or infant weight gain, offering customized solutions for each situation.
3. Problem-solving Skills: IBCLCs are trained to identify and resolve a wide range of breastfeeding concerns, including pain during nursing, mastitis, nipple confusion, and tongue tie. Their expertise enables them to troubleshoot challenges effectively, offering practical solutions to support successful breastfeeding.
4. Non-judgmental Support: IBCLCs offer compassionate and non-judgmental support to empower breastfeeding mothers. They understand the emotional and physical challenges that can come with breastfeeding and provide a supportive environment for mothers to express their concerns and receive guidance without feeling judged.
5. Prenatal Education: IBCLCs can provide valuable prenatal education to expectant mothers, offering guidance on breastfeeding techniques, establishing a good milk supply, and preparing for the breastfeeding journey even before the baby arrives.
6. Postnatal Assistance: IBCLCs offer extensive postnatal support, assisting mothers with proper positioning and latching, managing engorgement, and addressing any postpartum breastfeeding challenges that may arise.
7. Comprehensive Care: IBCLCs work in collaboration with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. They may coordinate care with pediatricians, obstetricians, and other specialists to provide a holistic approach to breastfeeding support.
8. Long-term Benefits: Hiring an IBCLC can lead to long-term success in breastfeeding, reducing the risk of early weaning and providing mothers and babies with a strong foundation for a healthy breastfeeding relationship.
Once you suspect something is not "quite right", trust your intuition and contact an IBCLC. The longer you wait, the more difficult the problem may be to resolve.
Check your insurance.
I work with a third party company that contracts with some major insurance plans. I don’t list which insurances due to updates that are done frequently. I would recommend you apply at the “TLN” link provided here and we will both be notified if you are covered.
Is your plan not covered?
If your plan is not covered I require payment at the time of service and will provide you a “Super Bill” that you can summit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.
